  • Description

THE TOWN OF NABLUS, ON THE WEST BANK OF THE JORDAN, HAS BEEN HIT RECENTLY BY A GENERAL STRIKE TO PROTEST AGAINST MILITARY OCCUPATION BY ISRAELI AUTHORITIES. THE KASBAH, A NET OF TINY ALLEYS AND BACK STREETS, HAS BEEN THE SCENE OF DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST THE ISRAELIS. THE ISRAELIS, FACED WITH THE TENSION IN THE TOWN, ARE TRYING TO CONTAIN THE DEMONSTRATIONS WITHIN THE KASBAH WHERE THERE IS LESS CHANCE OF THE ENTIRE TOWN BEING INFLAMED.

THE CALL FOR THE GENERAL STRIKE WAS MADE LAST TUESDAY (4 FEBRUARY) AT A MEETING OF NOTABLES CONVENED BY MAYOR HAMDI KANAAN, AT WHICH A MEMORANDUM WAS DRAFTED FOR DELIVERY TO ISRAELI DEFENCE MINISTER GENERAL MOSHE DAYAN. BECAUSE OF RECENT SUGGESTIONS OF SETTLEMENT OF THE MIDDLE EAST PROBLEMS THROUGH FOUR-POWER TALKS, THE ARAB COUNCILS SENT THE MEMORANDUM TO GET THEIR POINT OF VIEW ACROSS.

THE STRIKE WAS ALSO TO PROTEST AGAINST THE ENTRY OF ISRAELI TROOPS INTO A NABLUS SCHOOL ON MONDAY WHERE A NUMBER OF GIRL STUDENTS WERE DETAINED.

LAST WEDNESDAY (5 FEBRUARY), A DEMONSTRATION ERUPTED IN THE KASBAH, FOLLOWING THE LIFTING OF A TEMPORARY CURFEW IN THE AREA. THE CURFEW WAS IMPOSED EARLIER TO STOP INCIDENTS OF STONE-THROWING AT CARS. THE DEMONSTRATORS SHOUTED SLOGANS SUPPORTING PRESIDENT AND WAVED A JORDANIAN FLAG.

OUTSIDE THE KASBAH, HOWEVER, THE ISRAELIS MOUNTED ??? ???. THE ISRAELIS FEEL THAT IF THE DEMONSTRATIONS WERE ALLOWED TO SPREAD BEYOND THE KASBAH, BLOODSHED WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO AVOID IN THE TOWN OF 75,000 PEOPLE.

EVENTUALLY, WHEN IT SEEMED THE DEMONSTRATION MIGHT BE GETTING OUT OF HAND, THE ISRAELIS MOVED INTO THE KASBAH TO HALT IT. PEOPLE RUSHED TO THE ROOFTOPS. THE ISRAELIS, ACCUSED OF DEALING HARSHY WITH THOSE SUSPECTED OF CAUSING TROUBLE - SOME OF WHOM ARE TAKEN TO HEADQUARTERS FOR QUESTIONING -- QUICKLY DISPERSED THE DEMONSTRATORS AND LOUDSPEAKERS ANNOUNCED THE RE-IMPOSITION OF THE CURFEW.

ISRAELI TROOPS AND LOCAL CHILDREN CLEARED AWAY THE BARRIERS THAT DEMONSTRATORS HAD PLACED IN THE STREETS. ISRAELI LORRIES CLEARED AWAY OTHER OBSTACLES THAT REMAINED.

MR KANAAN, NABLUS' MAYOR, WAS ASKED ABOUT WHY THEME WERE TENSIONS BETWEEN ARAB AND ISRAELI IN NABLUS.
