Background: In Pakistan the film industry is high-speed stuff. Its churns out 125 full-length features annually, and new studios are springing up to meet the demand as thousands of Pakistanis queue weekly at cinema for a powerful fix of emotions.
The star of stars - and incidently one of the few in the industry -- is muscle-rippling Mohammed Ali, a hirsute Greek God of a fellow. In a country where the poor are very poor, and where few are even moderately rich, Ali is an exception. He earns GBP10,000 a film and during the last 12 years, he starred in 150 He is currently engaged on making 20 - all at the same time. The secret of heart-throb Ali, darling of a million Pakistani women, is simple -- directors decided to eliminate all rival talent by using him in every major movie.
Ali and the production-line method of operations combine to churn out weekly comedy-drama-musical-thriller-tragedies -- yes, the mix them all up in every film -- and the system work despite the censor. For there is no kissing, no drinking, and no politics allowed -- so they do the best with what's left, and according to box office receipts, they make a success of it. Above all, Pakistan audiences wants misery. So heroines pines, heroes brood and perform brave deeds, and Ali is said to wring every last drop of emotion while dying dozens of times a year. If anyone ever had a cause worth dying for Ali, who recently bought a GBP250,000 house, reckons he's found it.
