Background: THE GOVERNMENT OF THE SOUTH ARABIAN FEDERATION, REMAINS UNDECIDED ON THE FATE OF 13 EGYPTIANS DETAINED AT LODAR, AFTER THEIR RUSSIAN-BUILT AIRCRAFT CROSSED THE BORDER FROM YEMEN AND LANDED IN ERROR AT THE SMALL TOWNSHIP 100 MILES (160 KMS), NORTH OF ADEN, ON MONDAY.

CAPTAIN JOHN RICKETT, OF THE WELSH GUARDS, HALTED THE PLANE ON THE RUNWAY BY DRIVING HIS VEHICLE IN FRONT OF IT AS THE AIRCRAFT WAS PREPARING TO TAKE-OFF AGAIN.IMMEDIATELY, ALL THOSE ABOARD, INCLUDING FIVE OFFICERS, WERE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY.

LATER, AT A PRESS CONFERENCE, THE OFFICERS -- A LIEUTENANT-COLONEL AND FOUR MAJORS -- SAID THEY HAD BEEN MAKING FOR BEIDHA, A TOWNSHIP JUST OVER THE YEMEN BORDER.WEARING NO BADGES OF RANK, THEY DESCRIBED THEMSELVES AS "POLICE OFFICERS."
YEMEN HAS LODGED A PROTEST AGAINST THE DETENTION OF THE AIRCRAFT, BUT AS BRITAIN HAS NO DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH THE YEMENI REPUBLIC, IT IS NOT CLEAR TO WHOM THE PROTEST HAS BEEN MADE.

A DECISION ON THE RELEASE OF THE EGYPTIANS WILL REST WITH THE GOVERNMENT OF THE FEDERATION.SOME REPORTS SAY BRITAIN MIGHT CONFISCATE THE SOVIET-MADE IIYUSHIN TRANSPORT IN RETALIATION FOR LORRIES AND ARMS CONFISCATED WHEN A GROUP OF BRITISH TROOPS STRAYED INTO YEMEN IN JUNE.
