  • Description

Professor Paul Corea, Director of a National Midwives' school in Dakar, told a graduating class of 24 midwives recently that family planning was the only solution to the population problem in Africa, and that the Contraceptive Pill was the most efficient method.

He had some reservations to add. Family planning was not in itself a solution to under-development, no contraceptive method is without its risks, and in any case the African is not ready for it either psychologically or economically.

Later the Senegalese Minister of Health M. Dacuda Sow also spoke to the young graduates, emphasising the important role they would play in the community.

To signify their willingness to enter the service, the graduates took a formal oath, raising their hands together.

    Finally, they received their prizes.
