  • Description

CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA, READY TO LAUNCH LIEUTENANT COMMANDER SCOTT CARPENTER INTO ORBIT: TWO MECHANICAL FAULTS IN THE MERCURY SPACECRAFT, ONE IN THE PARACHUTE TO BE USED ON RETURN TO EARTH AND THE OTHER IN THE THERMOSTAT, WERE CORRECTED AND THE FINAL COUNT-DOWN BEGAN MAY 23. CARPENTER COMPLETED HIS PRE-LAUNCH TRAINING IN A SERIES OF SIMULATED FLIGHTS AND ALL WAS SET FOR THE LAUNCH MAY 24.

HOWEVER ONE OF THE BIGGEST DOUBT ABOUT CONDITIONS SUITABLE FOR A SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH CAME FROM AN UNUSUAL SOURCE. FIRES SWEEPING ACROSS WIDE AREAS OR EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK IN FLORIDA THREATENED MORE THAN THE WILD LIFE - SMOKE FROM THE FIRST HUNG IN A DENSE PALL OVER PARTS OF FLORIDA AND COULD PREVENT EFFECTIVE TRACKING OF THE INITIAL STAGE OF CARPENTER'S FLIGHT. STARTING MAY 21, THE FIRES FOILED ALL ATTEMPTS TO PUT THEM OUT.
