Background: The publisher-owner of an Athens newspaper was yesterday (Monday) sentenced to seven months imprisonment for misleading his readers -- the first case under Greece's new press law. Mr. Ioannis Horn, who owns the English language newspaper Athens News, was charged over publishing a banner headline which did not convey the spirit and meaning of the accompanying article.

The story concerned the arrival of united States Vice-President Spiro Agnew in Athens last month. A banner headline read "Bombs, Recruited Schoolchildren Greet Agnew". But, said the prosecution, the accompanying text contained no reference to bomb explosions or to schoolchildren -- thus misleading readers. Mr. Horn said the relevant paragraphs from the story were omitted by the printers. He is appealing against the prison sentence and 10,000 drachma (GBP140 sterling) fine imposed by the court.
