    THIRTEEN PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) IN POLICE RAIDS ON A NUMBER OF HONG KONG DEPARTMENT STORES SAID TO BE OWNED BY CHINESE COMMUNIST INTERESTS, AND TO BE SELLING PRODUCTS FROM THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA. A NUMBER OF WEAPONS AND ANTI-IMPERIALIST POSTERS WERE SEIZED.

    DURING ONE OF THE RAIDS, BY THE HONG KONG POLICE, A MOB ARMED WITH BOTTLES ATTACKED THE RIOT SQUAD WHEN IT TRIED TO TEAR DOWN INFLAMMATORY POSTERS AT AN ARTS AND CRAFTS STORE IN KOWLOON. THE POLICE SAID ONE OF THE CROWD TRIED TO SNATCH A CORPORAL'S CARBINE. THREE MEN AND A WOMAN WERE ARRESTED.

    NINE OTHER WERE ARRESTED IN RAIDS ON TWO FURTHER STORES. BRITISH TROOPS GUARDED THE STREETS AS THE POLICE MOVED IN. BUT THERE WAS NO RESISTANCE FROM THE CHINESE STAFF, WHO WERE MADE TO SIT ON THE FLOUR WITH THEIR HANDS BEHIND THEIR HEADS AS THE PREMISES WERE SEARCHED. POLICE SEIZED POSTERS AND LEAFLETS, ACID, SWORDS, CATAPULTS AND GAS MASKS.

    IT IS BELIEVE THAT ONE OF SEVERAL EXPLOSIONS LAST NIGHT MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY A BOMB THROWN FROM ONE OF THE STORES.
