  • Description

As Sudan and Egypt drew one-all in their African football elimination game for the 1976 Olympics, in Cairo on Friday (2 May), the crowd rioted. Spectators fought each other with firebrands, chairs and fists; the field was overrun with angry spectators protesting at the referee's decisions; and police fought with several of the crowd and arrested one Sudanese soldier who sparked off the rioting.

A number of spectators were injured.

Egypt's right half, Hassan Shehata scored first, 27 minutes after the start of the match -- the first leg of two. Sudanese centre forward Gagarin scored the equaliser in the 35th minute of the second half.

The second half will be played in Khartoum on May 30.
