Background: The former Shah of Iran is to leave the United States, according to his spokesman, Robert Armao. But Mr Armao has ruled out several countries thought to be likely destinations, including Egypt, where President Sadat earlier said that he was welcome. President Sadat's invitation drew objections from Opposition members including the leader of the Labour Socialist Party, Mr Ibrahim Shurki.

SYNOPSIS: Mr Shurki is leader of Egypt's main opposition party. He said the presence of the Shah would put the country's interests in danger and tens of thousands of police would be needed to protect him. He said the Shah could go to South Africa, where his father went before him when he had to flee Iran. But the Shah's spokesman later ruled out the possibility of going to South Africa. Mr Shurki also suggested the Shah could stay in the United States.

Mr Shurki said the United States has a duty to let the Shah stay there because he spent all his life protecting U.S. interests. He did not suggest that the Shah should be returned to Iran, where students holding United States hostages have called for him to be put on trial.

Mr Shurki was also concerned about possible harm to Egypt's relations with other Middle East nations, if the Shah were to accept President Sadat's offer of sanctuary.
