  • Description

Following the assassination May 30 of General Rafael Trujillo, 69-year-old dictator of Dominican Republic since 1930, the United States of America has reported to the Organization of American States that a "wave of terror" is sweeping the country. She has asked the O.A.S. to send a watchdog team to investigate.

But the first film out of the Dominican capital, Ciudad Trujillo, since the shooting, reveals the tension and shock there. At the airport, after flights had been cancelled and armed guards had been placed on the runways, passengers are now being allowed to book planes to leave the country.

The streets of the capital are deserted, shops and cinemas are closed. For the few who sit in the park, the flags that fly at half mast are a constant reminder that the regime of the man who was born penniless but became one of the richest men in the world is over.

Meanwhile, the U.S. aircraft carrier, "Shangri La", has left the Mayport Naval base in Florida under "general alert conditions" said a U.S. Naval spokesman, adding that her decks were jammed with jet fighters. The carrier is to be ready in the events of an emergency, it was said.
