  • Description

INTRODUCTION An extra-good year for wheat production in Argentina is causing problems. The authorities are having trouble distributing the surplus grain.

SYNOPSIS: Argentina is just one of the countries that's had a bumper crop this season, a season for which a world record harvest is forecast. The International Wheat Council expects the world harvest in 1976/77 to be more than 16 per cent higher than previous year. The Buenos Aires port is facing the strains the huge Argentinian wheat crop is putting on grain-handling facilities, and that problem's occurring at most other ports too.

Practically all silos and grain elevators are glutted and there are not enough grain carriers in the port to relieve the congestion. Two hundred and fifty thousand tonnes of Argentinian's wheat has been sold to China. Argentina is one of the largest exporters of wine and it's presently suffering from an over-production of that commodity too.

Lines of up to 600 lorries have ben parked at Buenos Aires waiting to unload. Some of them had been turned away from other ports where there are even bigger queues.

The drivers of the lorries don't know how long they will have to spend in the slow process of being unloaded. In the meantime they just wait, at times falling asleep under their trucks.
