  • Description

FUNCTIONS WERE HELD THROUGHOUT INDIA YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) ON THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF THE LATE MR. JAWAHARLAL NEHRU. HIS SUCCESSOR AS PRIME MINISTER, MR. LAL BAHADUR SHASTRI, ATTENDED A YOUTH FESTIVAL IN NEW DELHI AND LATER PAID HOMAGE AT MR. NEHRU'S CREMATION SITE.

MR. SHASTRI SAID MR. NEHRU WOULD ALWAYS REMAIN WITH INDIANS IN SPIRIT. "HE WAS BOTH A FIGHTER OF ALL GOOD CAUSES AND A MAN OF PEACE. A MAN OF REASON AND YET HIGHLY EMOTIONAL," HE SAID.

HE TOOK THE OPPORTUNITY TO DISCOUNT FEARS THAT INDIA'S FOOD SHORTAGE - WHICH HAS CAUSED RIOTS - WOULD BECOME CRITICAL. HE SAID HE HOPED RICE WOULD REACH MARKETS IN SUFFICIENT QUANTITIES IN THE NEXT 15 DAYS. HE ADDED THAT THERE HAD BEEN A BUMPER CROP THIS YEAR.
