  • Description

Police used tear gas shells to break up a demonstration in favour of Bangladesh outside the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi on Saturday (7 August) by the right-wing Hindu nationalist Jan Sangh party. The demonstration was the latest in a series by the Jan Sangh last week in which party workers have deliberately invited arrest to back demands for recognition of the self-proclaimed East Pakistani breakaway movement by the Indian Government.

SYNOPSIS: The Pakistani High Commission building in New Delhi was the scene on Saturday of another clash between police and members of the right-wing Hindu nationalist Jan Sangh party. The demonstrators demanded that the Indian Government recognise the self-proclaimed East Pakistan state of Bangladesh.

A large poster of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, leader of the banned Awami League in Pakistan, was carried by the demonstrators. They demanded his release from jail. Some 2,000 police were on hand.

The demonstrators wanted to deliver what they called a charge sheet and a warning to the High Commission and tried to break the police cordon to get to the building. Scuffles soon broke out. A group did manage to reach the building's gates where they threw in their message to Pakistani President Yahya Khan. Finally, police used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

More than 600 demonstrators were arrested. The demonstration was the latest in a series in which Jan Sangh workers deliberately courted arrest to force the Indian government to meet their demands.
