THE BRITISH QUEEN MOTHER WAS GREETED WITH A BOUQUET OF RED ROSES FROM PRESIDENT DE GAULLE. PEOPLE IN THE VILLAGES CAME OUT OF THEIR HOUSES AND WAVED IN WELCOME AND LARGE CROWDS TURNED OUT WHEREVER SHE STOPPED.

SHE DROVE BY CAR FROM SAINT MALO TO MONT SAINT MICHEL, WHERE SHE VISITED THE ABBEY, GUIDED BY THE CHIEF ARCHITECT. MONT SAINT MICHEL IS A GRANITE ISLAND, RISING 165FT (50 METRES), JUST OFF-SHORE. AT LOW TIDE, IT'S LINKED TO THE MAINLAND BY A CAUSEWAY AND SURROUNDED BY SAND: AT HIGH TIDE IT'S AGAIN AN ISLAND.

A MONASTERY WAS FIRST BUILT THERE IN 966 BY RICHARD THE FIRST, DUKE OF NORMANDY. THE MONASTERY WAS BURNED DOWN AND CHANGED HANDS SEVERAL TIMES UNTIL THE MID-NINETEENTH CENTURY WHEN IT WAS USED AS A PRISON.
