  • Description

UNITED STATES VICE-PRESIDENT SPIRO T. AGNEW WAS CONFRONTED WITH ANTI-AMERICAN DEMONSTRATIONS WHEN HE ARRIVED IN MANILA ON MONDAY AT THE START OF HIS ASIAN TOUR.

DESPITE A WARM PHILIPPINO WELCOME AT THE AIRPORT, THERE WAS A MOOD OF HOSPITALITY AS THE VICE-PRESIDENT DROVE TO THE AMERICAN EMBASSY.

DEMONSTRATORS HAD EARLIER BEEN PARADING IN FRONT OF THE EMBASSY CARRYING PLACARDS DENOUNCING "AMERICAN IMPERIALISM". POLICE FIRED TEAR-GAS TO DISPERSE THE CROWD.

BUT ABOUT 300 YOUNG DEMONSTRATORS HAD REFORMED TO BOO AND SHOUT AT THE VICE-PRESIDENT AS HE DROVE TOWARDS THE EMBASSY. TWO STUDENTS WERE ARRESTED AFTER A SMALL BOMB EXPLODED BEHIND THE VICE-PRESIDENT'S CAR, SLIGHTLY INJURING A NEWSMAN.

THE CAR ACCELERATED AND VAN SHED INTO THE EMBASSY GROUNDS. MR. AGNEW, APPARENTLY UNRUFFLED BY THE INCIDENT, WENT ON TO ATTEND AN EMBASSY RECEPTION.
