Background: In Paris on Monday (11 December) soldiers were called in by the municipal authorities to clear the streets of litter and garbage. For several days the streets of Paris have been strewn with overflowing dustbins because of a strike by city dustmen.....nearly five thousand of them...who want higher wages, better working conditions, and leather aprons.
SYNOPSIS: Because of a strike by Paris dustmen, the streets of the French capital have been strewn with overflowing dustbins and litter. On Monday, however, five days after the strike began, the municipal authorities called in the army to help. The young soldiers soon got into the swing of lifting and emptying dustbins. Within only a few hours the city streets were showing a noticeable improvement.
The dustmen of Paris....nearly five thousand of them....called the strike to back up their claim for higher wages, better working conditions, and leather aprons. The army, meantime, has swept into action.
