  • Description

ALTHOUGH RHODESIA NO LONGER EXPORTS OIL TO ZAMBIA, SHE CONTINUES TO SEND ACROSS THE ZAMBEZI ANOTHER KIND OF FUEL: COAL AND COKE FOR ZAMBIA'S COPPER MINING INDUSTRY.

ZAMBIA IMPORTS MORE THAN 100,000 TONS OF RHODESIAN COAL A MONTH -- THE BULK OF IT FOR USE IN COPPER PRODUCTION, THE MAINSTAY OF HER ECONOMY. BUT SHE IS PREPARING TO GET SUPPLIES ELSEWHERE SHOULD THE FRONTIER BE SEALED OR THE EXPORTS STOPPED. THE LUSAKA GOVERNMENT IS LOOKING INTO THE IDEA OF BRINGING THEM IN FROM TANZANIA OR ANGOLA. MEANWHILE, IT IS PRESSING AHEAD DEVELOPING A NEW OPEN-CAST MINE, WHICH IS SAID TO CONTAIN AT LEAST 11-MILLION TONS OF FUEL. IT IS EXPECTED TO BE IN OPERATION BY THE END OF MAY.

RHODESIA PLACES A LEVY ON EACH TON OF COAL. WHEN BRITAIN CLAMPED AN OIL EMBARGO ON RHODESIA, THE ILLEGAL REGIME INCREASED THE TAX FOUR TIMES. ON JANUARY 1, THE SMITH REGIME OFFERED TO RELAX IT, BUT PRESIDENT KAUNDA OF ZAMBIA REJECTED THIS AS "A CHEAP PROPAGANDA MOVE". ON JANUARY 3, RHODESIA ANNOUNCED THAT THE LEVY HAD BEEN SUSPENDED AS FROM JANUARY 1.
