TRANSCRIPT (SEQ 1 & 2): BRAUN: THERE IS NO POSSIBLE CHANCE THAT THIS WILL HAPPEN. IF ONE CONSIDERS THAT FOR THE LAST SIX OR SEVEN YEARS OUR FRIENDS ON THE I.O.C. AND WE OURSELVES HAVE BEEN FIGHTING AND ARGUING THE CASE TO GET SOUTH AFRICA BACK INTO THE OLYMPIC GAMES, IT WOULD BE SUCH A WASTE OF EFFORT -- EXPENSE AND EFFORT -- TO JUST PUSH THIS ALL DOWN THE DRAIN AGAIN. BESIDES WHICH, IT WOULD BE A SLAP IN THE FACE FOR OUR FRIENDS ON THE I.O.C. WHO HAVE BEEN SO GOOD TO US AND HAVE ASSISTED US WITH OUR RETURN TO THE GAMES. APART FROM WHICH, FOR YEARS NOW WE HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET OUR BEST WHITE AND NON-WHITE ATHLETES IN THE ONE TEAM TO ENJOY OLYMPIC COMPETITION AT TOP LEVEL.

QUESTION: THE RUSSIANS HAVE INDICATED THAT THEY WOULD POSSIBLY QUIT THE GAMES ALSO AS A PROTEST AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA'S INCLUSION. DO YOU THINK THEY'LL CARRY THIS THREAT OUT?.

BRAUN: I THINK, MYSELF, IT IS A TREMENDOUS BLUFF BECAUSE THERE IS SO MUCH TIME BETWEEN NOW AND THE FINAL ENTRY -- THE FINAL EXCEPTANCE OF ENTRIES FOR MEXICO CITY -- THAT THEY ARE IN A POSITION AT THE MOMENT TO EMBARRASS THE I.O.C. AND SOUTH AFRICA AND MORE SO MEXICO. BUT I DON'T THINK THAT ANY OF THE PARTIES INVOLVED ARE GOING TO BE AFFECTED BY THIS THREAT.

QUESTION: HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE THE ATTITUDE OF THESE COUNTRIES THAT HAVE WITHDRAWN?.

BRAUN: WELL IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED OF COURSE THAT THEY ARE JUST LIKE A GROUP OF CHILDREN WHO DON'T WANT TO GO TO THE SAME PARTY AS THE SOUTH AFRICANS, AND THAT THEY ARE GOING TO TRY AND HOLD OUT THIS THREAT TO TRY AND GET SOUTH AFRICA TO WITHDRAW. BUT THERE IS NO POSSIBLE CHANCE THAT WE WILL WITHDRAW. ON THE OTHER HAND, OF COURSE, IF THEY WOULD ONLY REALISE THAT BY PARTICIPATING IN THE SAME GAMES WITH SOUTH AFRICA WHEN SOUTH AFRICA'S FIRST MIXED TEAM GOES TO THE OLYMPICS THEY WILL BE MAKING HISTORY, AND THEY WILL HAVE ACTUALLY HAD THE ADVANTAGE THEN OF HAVING FOR THE FIRST TIME SOUTH AFRICAN WHITE AND NON-WHITE ATHLETES COMPETING AGAINST THEIR PEOPLE."

Background: SOUTH AFRICAN SPORTS ADMINISTRATORS TODAY (TUESDAY) BEGAN DETAILED PLANNING TO FIND AND TRAIN A MULTI-RACIAL TEAM FOR THE MEXICO CITY OLYMPICS IN OCTOBER. AND YESTERDAY THE SOUTH AFRICAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE PRESIDENT, MR. FRANK BRAUN, SAID THAT DESPITE PROTESTS AND BOYCOTTS ANNOUNCED SO FAR BY TEN AFRICAN NATIONS, HIS COUNTRY WOULD NOT WITHDRAW FROM THE MEXICO GAMES.

COMMENTING ON THE SPREADING BOYCOTT OF THE GAMES OF AFRICAN NATIONS, MR BRAUN SAID THAT THERE WAS NO CHANCE OF SOUTH AFRICA WITHDRAWING, AND THE WITHDRAWAL OF THESE AFRICAN STATES WOULD PRESENT NO DANGER TO SOUTH AFRICA'S PARTICIPATION.

ASKED IF SOUTH AFRICA WOULD WITHDRAW FROM THE GAMES, MR. BRAUN SAID:
WITH THE DECISION ON SOUTH AFRICA'S RE-ADMISSION TO THE GAMES NOW CONFIRMED, THE SOUTH AFRICAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE PLANS TO MEET TONIGHT TO SELECT SPECIAL SUB-COMMITTEES TO GO INTO DETAILS OF TRAINING AND EQUIPPING ATHLETES -- SOME OF THEM POTENTIAL GOLD-MEDALLISTS -- FOR THE MEXICO GAMES.
