Visnews filmed Feb 12 the arrival at Mexico City Airport of the Duchess of Kent and Princess Alexandra at the start of their month's tour in South America. They were welcomed by the British Ambassador Sir Andrew N Noble and the Mexican Foreign Minister, Manuel Tello.
After a short news conference at the airport, the Royal visitors left on a tour of the city, with only a single motorcycle escort. This was their first glimpse of the city's wide streets and imposing buildings; since Feb 12, Duchess and Princess Alexandra have become keen students of Mexican architecture. Their trips to well-known beauty spots and famous buildings have been carried out without police escort, and with little publicity.
Their journey will take them to Peru Chile and Brazil. The Duchess and her daughter are accompanied by Lady Rachel Davidson; Philip Hay, private secretary to the Duchess, and Henry Hankey, chief of the American department of the British Foreign Office. Sir John Taylor, former British ambassador to Mexico and director general of the Spanish, Portuguese and Brazilian councils since 1954, also is in the group.
After visiting Merida and Chichen Itza, Yucatan, the Duchess and her daughter will fly, Feb 20, to Lima where they will confer with the president of Peru. March 3 they will leave by plane for Santiago de Chile. The next day they will be received by the Chilean President. They will lunch with him and with the chiefs of the diplomatic missions.
