Background: THE 150 MEN OF 240 SQUADRON, ROYAL ENGINEERS, WHO ARRIVED IN NAIROBI, NOV 20, FROM BRITAIN, ARE NOW SPREAD OUT IN SMALL GROUPS OVER THE WORST-HIT FLOOD AREAS OF KENYA. ONE OF THESE GROUPS WAS FILMED IN THE MACHAKOS DISTRICT, SOUTH-EAST OF NAIROBI, Nov 28.

FLOODS CAUSED BY SIX WEEKS OF HEAVY RAIN FOLLOWED KENYA'S SEVEREST DROUGHT IN SEVENTY YEARS. WHILE ROYAL AIR FORCE PLANES ARE DROPPING FOOD SUPPLIES IN FAMINE-STRICKEN REGIONS, AND ROYAL MARINES IN ASSAULT CRAFT ARE BRINGING RELIEF TO MAROONED VILLAGES, THE SAPPERS HAVE THE TASK OF REPAIRING ROADS, BRIDGES AND AIRFIELDS, AND OF KEEPING COMMUNICATIONS OPEN FOR FURTHER RELIEF TO BE GIVEN.

AROUND MACHAKOS, AN ARMY AIR CORPS HELICOPTER WAS SCOUTING THE TERRAIN TO DIRECT MEN OF THE ROYAL ENGINEERS TO THE SPOTS MOST IN NEED OF SPEEDY REPAIR. THE HELICOPTER WAS PILOTED BY MAJOR FOREMAN, SAID TO HAVE RESCUED MORE THAN 30 PEOPLE IN THE FLOODED AREAS.

ROYAL ENGINEERS BROUGHT WATER IN A TANKER VEHICLE TO THE MACHAKOS TEACHERS' TRAINING COLLEGE WHERE WATER SUPPLIES HAD BEEN CUT. AFRICAN GIRL TEACHERS QUEUED WITH BUCKETS FOR THE PRECIOUS LIQUID. MEANWHILE, A WORK GANG OF SAPPERS WAS TOILING SIDE BY SIDE WITH LOCAL AFRICANS TO KEEP THE ROAD PASSABLE FOR ARMY TRUCKS TAKING FOOD TO THE STARVING WAKAMBA.
