Background: THE WORLD'S BIGGEST FIRE - A 600 FT JET OF NATURAL GAS ABLAZE SINCE NOVEMBER AT GASSI TOUIL IN THE FRENCH SAHARA - WAS SNUFFED OUT BY A DYNAMITE BLAST OVER THE WELL ON APR 28.

IN CHARGE OF THE OPERATION WAS RED ADAIR, THE TEXAS "FLYING FIREMAN" WHO SPECIALISES IN QUELLING OIL FIRES. ADAIR'S SUCCESS, THE RESULT OF A 550 LB DYNAMITE CHARGE, CAME ONLY A FEW HOURS AFTER HE SAID HE BELIEVED IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO EVER EXTINGUISH THE FLAME.

WEARING AN ASBESTOS SUIT, BE BACKED AN ASBESTOS-COATED BULLDOZER TO THE FLAMES UNDER A CURTAIN OF WATER FROM A BATTERY OF FIRE HOSES, AND LOWERED THE DYNAMITE BY CRANE. THEN HE AND HIS TEAM RAN TO SAFETY AND FIRED THE CHARGE.

THE FIRE, WHICH STARTED 5 1/2 MONTHS AGO, CONSUMED EACH DAY 6 MILLION CUBIC METRES OF NATURAL GAS - HALF THE DAILY CONSUMPTION OF PARIS. HAD IT NOT BEEN EXTINGUISHED IT WOULD HAVE BURNT FOR 100 YEARS. THE NEXT PROBLEM FOR THE ENGINEERS IS TO PLACE A METAL CAP OVER THE WELL.
