"I am sure that Canadians in all parts of our country were pleased when the president of France received such a warm welcome in Quebec: However, certain statements by the President tend to encourage a small minority of our population whose aim is to destroy Canada and as such they are unacceptable to the Canadian people and its government. The people of Canada are free: every province of Canada is free. Canadians do not need to be liberated."

Background: Lester Pearson, the former Canadian Prime Minister, died last night aged 75. He was taken into hospital on Christmas eve, suffering from cancer, which caused him to lose his right eye two years ago.
His years of premiership were marked by a succession of welfare measures such as medical care insurance. As a career diplomat, foreign minister, Liberal Party leader and Premier, Mr. Pearson brought Canada to a greater political maturity -- freer of political influence from Britain and the United States.
