Background: THIRTY-THREE DAYS AND FIFTEEN HOURS AFTER LEAVING PLYMOUTH, U.K., FRANK CHICHESTER, A 61-YEAR OLD ENGLISH MAP MAKER, BROUGHT HIS 39-FOOT YACHT "GYPSY MOTH II" PAST THE AMBROSE LIGHTSHIP, NEW YORK, U.S.A., AFTER HAVING SAILED HER SINGLE-HANDED ACROSS THE ATLANTIC. IN THE EARLY HOURS OF JULY 5 HE TIED UP AT STATEN ISLAND TO CLEAR CUSTOMS AND IMMIGRATION AND HAD HIS FIRST MEETING WITH OTHER HUMAN BEINGS SINCE LEAVING PLYMOUTH.

AFTER CLEARING CUSTOMS, MR. CHICHESTER, NOW JOINED BY HIS WIFE WHO HAD FLOWN OUT FROM ENGLAND TO GREET HIM, MADE A SHORT TRIP TO A BERTH AT CITY ISLAND. "GYPSY MOTH'S" AUXILIARY ENGINE PROPELLED HER UP THE HUDSON RIVER, PAST THE STATUE OF LIBERTY. AT THIS POINT THE LARGEST AND SMALLEST TRANSATLANTIC VESSELS PASSED EACH OTHER IN MID-RIVER AND THE 83,000 TONS "QUEEN ELIZABETH" GAVE A THREE-BLAST SALUTE TO THE 13-TON "GYPSY MOTH". MOMENTS LATER, THE TINY YACHT'S GLORIOUS VOYAGE ENDED ON A NOTE OF HUMILIATION. IN SIGHT OF THE MANHATTAN SKYLINE HER ENGINE FAILED AND THE CRIPPLED YACHT MADE THE FINAL STAGE OF HER JOURNEY UNDER TOW.

CHICHESTER'S HEROIC VOYAGE BROKE HIS OWN RECORD OF 40 DAYS FOR A LONE ATLANTIC CROSSING. HE RECEIVED CONGRATULATORY CABLES AND MESSAGES FROM ALL PARTS. AMONG THEM WERE MESSAGES FROM PRINCE PHILIP AND PRESIDENT KENNEDY. HE NOW PLANS TO RETURN TO PLYMOUTH IN "GYPSY MOTH", BUT THIS TIME ACCOMPANIED BY HIS WIFE AND FIFTEEN-YEAR OLD SON.
