    In Athens, members of the World Peace Council (WPA) from all over Europe have been attending a conference on disarmament. The meeting, jointly arranged by the Greek WPC and the movement for International Detente, opened in the Athens City Hall on Saturday (24 June).

    SYNOPSIS: Mrs Eleni Hadjipetrou, President of the Greek Women Jurists Association, gave the opening address at the conference. The meeting was designed to promote international co-operation on disarmament and to mobilise world public opinion against the production of the neutron bomb. This weapon, currently being developed in the United States, is specifically intended to kill people while leaving buildings in the area of the blast unharmed. The neutron bomb is one of the major causes of disagreement between the United Stats and the Soviet Union.

    Among the celebrated delegates at the conference was the Greek composer, Mikis Theodorakis. Famous for his music, he was a vociferous opponent of the former Greek military government, which feel in 1974. A Communist since his youth, he was arrested by the junta. After a period of imprisonment, during which he claimed he had been tortured, he was released after protests form several European governments. Mr. Theodorakis is now a member of the Greek United Left Party, which includes the Communist Party.

    He said the Peace Council conference was dealing with issues of critical importance to the survival of mankind. Peaceful coexistence was imperative, especially since the development of sophisticated and powerful nuclear weapons, and there should be world-wide opposition to the neutron bomb.
