    Egyptians yesterday (Thursday) mourned the third anniversary of the death of former Chief of Staff General Abdul Moneim Riad -- killed on the West Bank of the Suez Canal during an artillery duel in 1969. A memorial ceremony at General Riad's grave in Cairo was led by his brother, Communications Minister Mahmoud Riad, and Army leaders. In an anniversary day tribute circulated to the armed forces, War Minister Mohamed Sadek said General Riad had given the nation an example of sacrifice and self-denial.

    SYNOPSIS: Egyptian Army leaders gathered at the tomb of former Chief of Staff General Abdul Moneim Riad on Thursday -- the third anniversary of the General's death. He was killed on the West Bank of the Suez Canal During an artillery duel on March 9th, 1969. He is buried in the Family tomb in south-cast Cairo.

    Army officers greeted General Riad's brother, Egyptian Communications Minister Mahmoud Riad. The former Chief of Staff is credited in Egypt for a major plan to destroy the Israeli Bar Lev defensive line along the Suez Canal. He was killed just twenty-four hours after the Egyptians claimed the destruction of the first gun emplacement on the Bar Lev Line. In an anniversary day message to all the armed forces, Deputy Premier and War Minister Mohammed Sadek said that General Riad had set an example of sacrifice and self-denial to the entire nation.
