  • Description

London's busiest street in the pre-Christmas shopping spree is Oxford Street. Normally it is well lit by street lights and the glow from street lamps and shop windows, but tonight (Wednesday) it was transformed as the city's Christmas lights were switched on.

Each year the designer of the lighting scheme, Beverley Pick, selects a different but appropriate theme. This year he has selected Christmas boxes - suspended from the twigs of Christmas trees. The gift boxes are arranged three to a twig and there are two twigs to each wire, placed in pairs down the length of the street.

The twigs are each 22 feet (6.5 metres) high and are adorned with gold coloured baubles and lit with thousands of coloured lamps. The boxes, which are translucent, are internally illuminated to give the effect of stained glass - a contemporary treatment of a traditional theme.

The lights were switched on by the Marchioness of Blandford at 6 o'clock this evening local time. And for the next few weeks they will be as great an attraction to Londoners and visitors as the crowded shop windows of London's famed shopping mecca.
