  • Description

In Washington, Democratic Senator George McGovern's hopes of a first ballot victory at his party's Presidential nominating convention next month suffered a setback on Thursday (29 June) when the party credentials committee voted to deprive him of 151 California delegate votes.

The delegate votes are to be divided among his rival candidates in proportion to their vote totals in the California primary.

Mr. McGovern's main rival, Senator Hubert Humphrey, was interrupted during a speech with the news. Obviously pleased, he told reporters that they could now put away their "political obituaries."
Senator McGovern reacted angrily, saying it was the "rottenest political steal" that he'd seen in his public career.

The credentials committee made its decision in the course of a meeting to approve the 3,000 delegates who will choose the party's Presidential candidate at Miami, Florida.

Senator Humphrey, who lost heavily in the California primary, and other McGovern rivals vigorously contested the winner-take-all provision in the vote that gave all 271 California delegates to the South Dakota Senator.
