  • Description

In China, three newly born cubs belonging to one of the few remaining species of Northeastern Tigers, were recently shown to the public at the Harbin zoo. The litter brings to more than seventy the number of these animals live in zoos throughout China. The Harbin zoo's two male and four female tigers have produced seventy-nine cats since 1959 and sixty-eight have survived.

SYNOPSIS: The latest addition to the tiger pride at the Harbin Zoo in the northeastern province of Heilongiinag were enjoying such good health that they were recently displayed to the public. Tigers from this are noted, when full-grown, for their large bodies and beautiful fur. And life in captivity has agreed with the Harbin Zoo tigers--they have reproduced despite the fact that tigers often do not mate in captivity. Even in the wild they are extremely selective about their mates. A census taken by a professor at the Harbin Forestry Institute with the help of local hunters and peasants has revealed there are only between one and two hundred Manchurian tigers still roaming wild in ??? Province.

The cubs were given a nutritious high-protein diet supplement of raw-steak and eggs. In China, as in most of the world the tiger is considered and endangered species and hunting it is against the law. This particular species of Chinese tiger is extremely rare. Besides it's size, it's longer softer and parler fur distinguishes it from the tigers in other parts of Asia. The tiger is thought to have originated in northern Eurasia and then to have moved southwards.

The cubs fancy diet was accompanied by bottle-feeding. Tigers are coveted in zoos around the world. These ones, like a few of the ones born in earlier litters may end up in zoos in other countries. Several of the tigers born in the Harbin Zoo have been traded for equally rare species that live in other parts of the world. This late film shows the cubs off the bottle and being maintained on a staple adult diet of raw meat.
