  • Description

Five-Power Commonwealth talks on the future defence of the Malaysia-Singapore area opened in Singapore today (Thursday).

The three-day discussions were due to begin yesterday, but were postponed 24 hours when floods delayed the arrival of the Malaysian delegation.

The talks are being held at middle level with Australia, Britain, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore taking part. They are expected to pave the way for a full ministerial meeting in London later this year.

The major problem facing the delegations is likely to be the future of the British Army Jungle Warfare Training School in Southern Malaysia which is due to be handed over to the Malaysians at the end of this year.

Britain wants a definite commitment on future training facilities from Malaysia, but reports say Malaysia is unlikely to make one at this stage which will pose problems for Britain's forward defence planning.
