  • Description

MEMBERS OF THE 10TH BATTALION OF THE BRITISH PARACHUTE REGIMENT MADE A NOSTALGIC TRIP TO ARNHEM IN HOLLAND YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) TO RECALL THE FAMOUS OPERATION IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR. IN SEPTEMBER 1944 THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT TOOK PART IN THE RAID ON ARNHEM. 10,000 MEN WERE DROPPED OR LANDED BY GLIDER BEHIND ENEMY LINES AT ARNHEM IN AN ATTEMPT TO SECURE THE RHINE BRIDGE.

SEPTEMBER 1944 PROVED A GRIM TIME FOR THE ALLIED TROOPS AT ARNHEM, AND FOR THE LOCAL PEOPLE. FOR NINE DAYS THE BATTLE RAGED, THEN CAME THE DECISION TO EVACUATE. ONLY 2,163 PEOPLE WERE GOT OUT SAFELY WHILE A FURTHER 300 MANAGED TO ESCAPE AFTER BEING SHELTERED BY THE DUTCH. SOME 6,000 WERE CAPTURED, THE MAJORITY OF THEM WOUNDED, AND 1,130 KILLED.

IN RETALIATION FOR THE ASSISTANCE THE DUTCH GAVE TO THE ALLIED TROOPS, THE NAZIS FORCED THE INHABITANTS OF ARNHEM AND OOSTERBEEK TO LEAVE AND PLUNDERED THE ENTIRE AREA AS "WAR BOOTY."
SINCE THOSE FATEFUL DAYS IN 1944 THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT HAS HAD STRONG LINKS WITH THE PEOPLE OF ARNHEM. CROWDS WATCHED THE PARACHUTISTS DROP AT GINKEL HEIDE AND THEN MARCH TO THE NEARBY ARNHEM MEMORIAL FOR A BRIEF SERVICE COMMEMORATING THE BATTLE.
