  • Description

In this modern jet age, memories of epech-making sea adventures of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries were bought to life by the daring attempt of six Spaniards to sail a Chinese junk to Barcelona from Hong Kong.

The 60 feet junk "RUBIA" equipped with a 60 horsepower engine is expected to complete its 11,000 mile voyage from HongKong through the Mediterranean to Barcelona is six months. The engine would come in Mandy if the wind fails the traditional, rice-straw sail.

If the attempt succeeds, it will be the first time a Chinese junk has pleughed through the blue waters of the Mediterranean.

The junk was christened at Hong Kong's Queens Pier by Right Rev. Father Vidal Clemente, who gave the junk and the sailors his blessings.

If good wishes and God's blessings are of any help is the hazardous journey, the young adventurers will have plenty of it. And indications are they need them in abundance, because although the young men have plenty of guts, none of them possess any knowledge of deep sea navigation. They had not even seen a junk before and had very little idea of what was ahead of them.

The six Spaniards making the trip are: Jose Maria Toy, 39 year old merchant from Barcelona (leader of the party), Joaquin Del Meline, 28, industrial engineer; Oril Regas, 25, student; Jose De Luis Madez, 24, industrial photographer: Mauricio Cuesta, 30, industrialist; and Luis Maynard, 39, former, aviator.

A Hong King enlisted 19 year old Chinese Mr. Joseph Lui, who will act as the cook to Barcelona will be the seventh man. He will fly from Barcelona to Canada to join his family.

The trip was sponsored by a Hong Kong merchant, Mr. Jules Joseph Brecard, who bought and equipped the junk.

The Honerary Spanish Consul in Hong Kong and many prominent members of the Spanish community were at hand to wish the youngsters "Bon voyage" and safe arrival.
