  • Description

AN INSTITUTE NAMED AFTER THE LATE CONGOLESE PRIME MINISTER, M. PATRICE LUMUMBA, WAS INAUGURATED IN NAIROBI YESTERDAY (SATURDAY). M. MAURICE LUMUMBA, A BROTHER OF THE MURDERED CONGOLESE LEADER, WAS PRESENT.

THE PLAQUE READS: "THIS INSTITUTE IS DEDICATED TO LUMUMBA THE PATRIOT WHO DIED AT THE HANDS OF THE IMPERIALISTS AND THEIR AGENTS FOR HIS FIRM CHAMPIONSHIP OF GENUINE AFRICAN POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE AND SOCIALISM IN AFRICA."
THE INAUGURATION WAS ONE OF MR. KENYATTA'S FIRST TASKS AS PRESIDENT OF THE NEWLY-BORN KENYA REPUBLIC. HE SAID THE INSTITUTE WOULD SERVE AS A CENTRE FOR STUDIES TO HELP IN THE JOB OF NATION-BUILDING.

ITS FIRST AIM, HE SAID, WOULD BE TO PROVIDE COURSES COVERING "PARTY ORGANISATION, OBJECTIVES OF GOVERNMENT POLICY AND TECHNIQUES OF POLITICAL WORK." SEMINARS AND DISCUSSIONS FOR PARTY WORKERS AND OFFICIALS WOULD ALSO BE ARRANGED.

    (M. PATRICE LUMUMBA WAS THE CONGO'S FIRST PRIME MINISTER. DURING THE POST-INDEPENDENCE POLITICAL UPHEAVAL, HE WAS KIDNAPPED - ALLEGEDLY BY KATANGESE TRIBESMEN - AND IN FEBRUARY, 1961, WAS FOUND MURDERED).
