THE RACIAL DEMONSTRATIONS IN AMERICA GO ON - IN THE EAST AND SOUTH.

IN CAMBRIDGE, MARYLAND TWO EMPTY NEGRO HOUSES WENT UP IN HURLING BRICKS AT PEDESTRIANS. STATE AND LOCAL POLICE WERE CALLED OUT AND BROKE UP AN ANGRY NEGRO CROWD WHICH THREATENED TO MARCH ON A WHITE NEIGHBOURHOOD.

THREE NEGRO DEMONSTRATORS AND THEIR WHITE LEADER - A NEW YORK WOMAN - WERE ARRESTED FOR REFUSING TO VACATE A SEGREGATED LUNCH COUNTER. THEY WERE LATER RELEASED. DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED BEFORE THE LUNCH COUNTER AND HELD A PRAYER MEETING OUTSIDE THE CITY GAOL, AS TALKS WITH CITY OFFICIALS AND INTEGRATION GROUPS WENT ON TO TRY TO EASE THE TENSION.

IN NEW YORK, THE CAMPAIGN IS FOR THE EMPLOYMENT OF A GREATER NUMBER OF NEGROES AND PUERTO RICANS. SCUFFLING BROKE OUT FOR THE FIFTH TIME IN THE WEEK IN THE BRONX, THE BOROUGH OF NEW YORK CITY, WHERE A GROUP OF PICKETS REPRESENTING THE CONGRESS OF RACIAL EQUALITY DEMONSTRATED OUTSIDE A WHITE CASTLE RESTAURANT.

THEY WANT THE RESTAURANT CHAIN TO EMPLOY 25 NEGROES AND PUERTO RICANS WITHIN A MONTH. THE RESTAURANT CHAIN SAYS IT WILL HIRE ANYBODY WHO IS QUALIFIED. A CROWD OF HECKLERS ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT THREW HOT COFFEE AT THE PICKETERS, AND ADVANCED TOWARDS THEM. THE THREATENED RIOT WAS QUICKLY BROKEN UP BY POLICE, WHO FORCED THE HECKLERS BACK AND DISPERSED THEM. THE CITY'S COMMISSION ON HUMAN RIGHTS IS ATTEMPTING TO MEDIATE THE DISPUTE.

THE SOUTHERN PORT CITY OF SAVANNAH, IN GEORGIA TURNED INTO THE MOST VIOLENT SPOT IN THE NATION BY THURSDAY, AFTER A WEEK OF DEMONSTRATIONS AND PROTEST MARCHES. ABOUT 1,000 SINGING, CHANTING NEGROES MARCHED INTO THE DOWNTOWN SECTION DEMANDING THE DESEGREGATION OF PUBLIC PLACES.

THEY LAY DOWN IN THE STREETS AT SEVERAL INTERSECTIONS AND BLOCKED TRAFFIC. WHEN THEY WERE CARRIED AWAY BODILY TO POLICE WAGONS TO BE HAULED TO GAOL, THEY BROKE OPEN THE DOORS WHILE OTHERS LAY DOWN ON THE STREETS TO BLOCK THE WAGONS. OFFICIALS ORDERED THE POLICE TO BREAK UP THE CROWD BY ANY MEANS. POLICE FIRED A DOZEN TEAR GAS BOMBS. THE NEGROES SCATTERED. THEN THEY DARED POLICE TO FIRE MORE TEAR GAS BOMBS. THE POLICE DID AND THE NEGROES RESPONDED BY THROWING ROCKS AT THE POLICE.

AND FURTHER VIOLENCE TODAY (FRIDAY) - IN CAMBRIDGE, WHITES AND NEGROES DROVE THROUGH THE STREETS FIRING AT PEOPLE OF THE OPPOSITE RACE. THE TROUBLE CAME AFTER FIVE WHITES, INCLUDING THREE NATIONAL GUARDSMEN HAD BEEN SHOT.
