Background: Portuguese Foreign Minister Mario Soares extended his five-day visit to India by an extra day to go sightseeing in the town of Agra, 120 miles (190 kilometres) south of the capital, New Delhi. The highspot of his tour was a visit -- accompanied by his wife and daughter to the Taj Mahal.

Wednesday's (1 January) day of relaxation followed five days of intensive talks with Indian officials to discuss the position of three former Portuguese enclaves on the subcontinent -- Goa, Daman and Diu. These meetings culminated on Tuesday (31 December) with the resumption between the two countries of diplomatic relations -- after a 20-year break -- and the singing of a treaty handing full sovereign rights to the enclaves back to India.

A joint communique issued on the same day also spoke of hopes on both sides for increased co-operation between the two countries and of plans to conclude soon a cultural agreement.

On Wednesday evening Dr. Soares left for a 24-hour visit to Moscow for talks with Soviet leaders. He was then scheduled to go on to Bucharest for talks with Rumanian leaders.
