  • Description

Cuba's battle for stable democratic government continues after leaflet 'bombing' of and mass demonstrations in the capital havana, 21-22 OCT.

Allegedly USA-based aircraft of deposed dictator Batista dived on the city throwing out anti-Castro leaflets and, so the Castro government claims, bombs.

The leaflets denounced Castro as a Communist and the bombs, which accounted for two lives and many injuries, are thought to be shells fired by police, troops and frigates at the leaflet-dropping planes. Also, that same night, fast cars raced through Havana with guns blazing and with bombs being hurled from them.

The following day Castro appeared in the streets. A knife-carrying drunkard was arrested close to Castro - he was thought to be a would-be-assassin. Public opinion against the USA was whipped up during out-door speeches, TV and radio broadcasts by Castro and his colleagues. A one hour strike was declared and hundreds of Cubans flocked to demonstrate outside the US Embassy.

The Following day, Oct. 22, demonstrators continued to roam the streets denouncing former Cuban ruler Batista. The two victims of the night raids were buried to the accompaniment of wide-spread mourning.

The mood in Havana was angry - at Batista and at the USA. One slogan carried by mobsters declared: Down with monkey Batista. Above it was a monkey's head.

Added to the country's troubles was the resignation of Camaguey garrison commander Major Matos. With 30 other officers he withdrew from the Army to spotlight what the called the country's swing to the Left. Castro denounced him during one of his Havana public meetings. as a traitor. Matos was flown to Havana.
