  • Description

The world's first atomic-powered passenger-cargo ship, the N.S. (nuclear ship) "Savannah", was launched July 21 at Camden, New Jersey. Designed to demonstrate America's desire for peaceful uses of atomic energy, she was named by Mrs. Eisenhower, wife of the President, who broke a bottle of champagne across the ship's steel bows.

The 22,000-ton "Savannah" is to make her maiden voyage with cargo next year, and will be able to operate for three and a half years on one loading of fuel. She is named after the "Savannah", which in May and June of 1818 made the first steam assisted Atlantic crossing, using her engines for eighty hours during the journey.
