Background: British troops shot a rioter dead in Belfast early today (Saturday) at the height of a night of violence in which petrol bombs blazed and a number of soldiers were wounded by gelignite bombs loaded with nails.

The latest round of street fighting began yesterday (Friday), the second day of a visit by British Home Secretary Reginald Maudling. The Minister returned to London today; he told pressmen that the battle against Catholic extremists would be a long haul, but there was no chance of the British Government relinquishing control over the province.
