  • Description

Amman's Moslem community celebrated the fast of Al-Adha on Wednesday (26 January)
For centuries, Al Adha has commemorated Abraham's sacrifice to God - the Bible says that Abraham, in his desire to please God, tied his son to an altar and was prepared to offer his life as a sacrifice. According to the Bible, God stopped Abraham and accepted a lamb instead.

Tradition holds that Abraham is an ancestor of both Arabs and Jews, and so the feast of Al-Adha is celebrated with prayers and sacrificial lambs. Rich Moslems slaughter one lamb for their families. The carcass is cut into three parts - one third for the neighbours, one third for the poor, and the remaining third for themselves.
