    Delegates from fifty African countries have been meeting in the Ivory Coast to investigate the popularity and effectiveness of traditional herbal medicine, which is in many cases more popular and more available than western methods.

    SYNOPSIS: The use of traditional herbal medicine is becoming increasingly popular. Ivory Coast Minister for Scientific Research, Mr. Jean Lorougnon Guede told delegates that traditional medicine was getting its "second wind", and that it had much to offer even modern technological methods. Also, many Africans'; preference for traditional medicine meant that it should be more efficiently screened by official health bodies.

    The conference has arranged by the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). Member delegates heard that as many as eighty-five percent of African people relied on traditional herbal remedies.

    Attending the conference were a variety of botanists, chemists, and physiologists from fifty African countries. Their meeting coincided with the World Health Organisation's (WHO) investigation this year into the use of traditional herbal medicines, or Ethnobotany, as it is more accurately called.

    On show were a variety of the herbs and plants in current use throughout Africa. Their effectiveness is due not only to their chemical and curing properties but also to be faith which many people have in them. Also stressed during the symposium was the high cost of western drugs in African developing countries, as well as their frequently poor quality.
