  • Description

A PETROL BOMB WAS THROWN THROUGH THE WINDOW OF A HOUSE IN THE AFRICAN TOWNSHIP OF MAFOKOSI, NEAR SALISBURY, ON TUESDAY NIGHT. WHILE THE HOUSE WAS EXTENSIVELY DAMAGED, THE OCCUPANTS ESCAPED WITHOUT INJURY.

THE HOUSE WAS OWNED BY MR ANTHONY MASAWI, A STAUNCH SUPPORTER OF MR JOSHUA NKOMO'S PEOPLE'S CARETAKER COUNCIL (P.C.C.)
A LARGE CROWD OF SYMPATHISERS AND SUPPORTERS WERE OUTSIDE THE HOUSE THE FOLLOWING MORNING WHEN OUR CAMERAMEN ARRIVED. ALL THE HOUSEHOLD BELONGINGS WERE PILED UP ON THE LAWN.

(THE SOUTHERN RHODESIAN GOVERNMENT RECENTLY IMPOSED A BAN ON MR NKOMO AND PEOPLE'S CARETAKER PARTY FROM ATTENDING OR CONVENING PUBLIC MEETINGS. THE BAN LASTS FOR THREE MONTHS. ANNOUNCING THE GOVERNMENT'S DECISION MR DUPONT, MINISTER OF JUSTICE, SAID IN A STATEMENT: "IT IS WELL KNOWN THAT THE DISTURBANCES IN AFRICAN TOWNSHIPS HAVE FOLLOWED A PATTERN OF VIOLENCE, INTIMIDATION, AND THE DISRUPTION OF EVERYDAY LIFE, USUALLY AFTER PUBLIC GATHERING OF MEMBERS OF THE PEOPLE'S CARETAKER COUNCIL, AND MR NKOMO HAS NOT RECENTLY DENOUNCED VIOLENCE IN THE WAY THE REVEREND N. SITHOLE HAS, NOR HAS HE CURBED THE ACTIVITIES OF HIS FOLLOWERS IN ANY WAY.")
