  • Description

North Vietnamese young volunteers are working day and night to restore road communications disrupted by American bombing raids.

This official film shows an American aircraft on a bombing raid somewhere over North Vietnam. The raids are inflicting increasing damage, and young men and women are labouring side to keep road transport going.

As damaged roads and bridges are rebuilt, camouflaged bicycles carry munitions and supplies along narrow tracks cut through the bush. But they cannot meet all the country's transport needs, and heavy trucks must still be able to move around.

Now the volunteer brigades have developed a technique for building light makeshift bridges of bamboo. They set to work as soon as night falls, and before long a convoy of camouflaged trucks can roll across the river. When daylight comes, fresh air raids almost always destroy the bamboo bridges. But the work starts again at night usually at a different point on the river.

The United States Command has admitted that its aircraft are meeting increasingly heavy anti-aircraft fire over targets in North Vietnam. 256 American aircraft have been lost in raids over the North in the past 16 months.
