Background: In Osaka, buses powered by electric batteries are being used in a trial to overcome auto- pollution in Japan's second largest city.
The Osaka Municipal Transport Bureau has put two electric buses on the road and says they are very successful. Passengers like the quieter and smoother ride and, unlike diesel-powered buses, there is no exhaust pollution.
The battery powered buses can carry the same number of passengers at the same speed as diesel buses. But the Osaka Municipal Transport Bureau says several problems will have to be ironed out before the electric buses will be economically visable.
The battery unit must be reduced in weight to case the strain on suspension and tyres, and operating costs must be reduced by about half.
