  • Description

FRANCE WILL VOTE FOR HER NEW PRESIDENT ON JUNE 1ST. THE DATE WAS ANNOUNCED TODAY (FRIDAY) AFTER THE FRENCH CABINET MET FOR THE FIRST TIME UNDER THE CHAIRMANSHIP OF INTERIM PRESIDENT ALAIN POHER, WHO TOOK OVER AS TEMPORARY HEAD OF STATE WHEN GENERAL DE GAULLE RESIGNED ON MONDAY.

THE CABINET MEETING, WHICH TOOK PLACE AT THE ELYSEE PALACE, LASTED FOR AN HOUR. IF NO PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE WINS FIFTY PER CENT OF THE VOTE ON JUNE 1ST, A SECOND ROUND OF VOTING WILL BE HELD ON JUNE 15TH, IT WAS DECIDED.

THE MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR, M. RAYMOND MARCELLIN TOLD THE CABINET MEETING THAT THE GOVERNMENT WAS DOING EVERYTHING IT COULD TO PREVENT DISTURBANCES TROUBLING THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. THE FOREIGN MINISTER, M. MICHEL DEBRE REPORTED ON REACTION TO GENERAL DE GAULLE'S DEPARTURE WHICH WAS, HE SAID, ONE OF STUPEFACTION.

    M. POHER IS BELIEVED TO HAVE WARNED THAT PUBLIC ORGANISATIONS MUST NOT SHOW BIAS IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION AND TO HAVE NOTED THAT HIS OWN TASK WAS TO WATCH OVER WHAT HE CALLED THE LOYALTY OF PUBLIC ORGANISATIONS.

THE CABINET IS TO MEET AGAIN IN A WEEK'S TIME.
