    THE LEADER OF A GROUP OF TEN BASUTOS, UNABLE TO RETURN TO THEIR COUNTRY BECAUSE THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT WILL NOT GIVE THEM TRANSIT VISAS, SAID IN LONDON TODAY THAT THE GROUP HAD NOT VISITED EITHER CHINA OR ALGERIA DURING THEIR TRAVELS.

    THE PARTY HAS BEEN IN LONDON SINCE 13 AUGUST, AFTER BEING FLOWN FROM NAIROBI WHEN THEY COULD NOT GET TRANSIT VISAS TO TRAVEL THROUGH SOUTH AFRICA.

    THE GROUP'S LEADER, MR L.CHAKELA, IN AN INTERVIEW WITH NEWSMEN TODAY DENIED THAT THE GROUP HAD VISITED CHINA.THEY HAD BEEN TO DAR-ES-SALAAM AND NAIROBI HE SAID.

    AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT RELEASED ON BEHALF OF THE TEN MEN TODAY BY THE BASUTOLAND CONGRESS PARTY SAID THAT THEY HAD BEEN INFORMED THEY WERE TRAVELLING THROUGH LONDON SO THAT ARRANGEMENTS COULD BE MADE FOR TRANSIT FACILITIES.

    THE STATEMENT DESCRIBED AN ALLEGATION BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT THAT THE MEN HAD TRAINED IN SUBVERSION AS 'ARRANT NONSENSE', AND ACCUSED THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT OF CONNIVING WITH SOUTH AFRICA TO PREVENT THE MEN FROM RETURNING HOME.

    THE STATEMENT ACCUSED SOUTH AFRICA OF OBSTRUCTING APPEALS TO THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR IN PRETORIA TO ASSIST IN GETTING THE MEN HOME.
