Background: Chiefs from the Greater Accra region of Ghana held a "Durbar" on August the third to welcome back the country's head of state and members of the National Redemption Council from a visit to the other regions of Ghana.

The National Redemption Council, under the chairmanship of Colonel I.K. Acheampong, formed the Government in Ghana in January this year after taking over power from the civilian administration of Doctor Kofi Busia.

The National Redemption Council had travelled to the other regions of Ghana in a visit which Colonel Acheampong described as "historic".

The visit to the regions had been made by the Council to give added impetus to the Government's drive to restore economic health to Ghana.

During the ceremony, Colonel Acheampong warned foreign investors that exploitation of the country's resources would no longer be tolerated. Ghana, he said, extended the hand of friendship to foreign investors, "but they would be welcome as friends, not as masters".

SYNOPSIS: In a carnival-like atmosphere, chiefs & other people from the Greater Accra region of Ghana gathered for a Durbar to welcome back the country's head of state and members of the National Redemption Council. Colonel Ignatius-Acheampong, the Council's chairman, and members of the council were winding up a two-week country-wide tour of the nine regional capitals.

Colonel Acheampong, and the National Redemption Council have ruled Ghana since they took power from the civilian administration of Doctor Kofi Busia in January of this year. Here's part of Colonel Acheampong's address......
Among other things, Colonel Acheampong warned foreign investors that exploitation of the country's resources would no longer be tolerated. Foreign investors were welcome, he said, but as "fiends and not as masters." He went on to say that the Government was committed to a social revolution which could only come about when Ghana was economically independent.
