  • Description

THE CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER, MR LESTER PEARSON, SAID TONIGHT (TUESDAY) THAT PRESIDENT DE GAULLE'S APPARENT ENDORSEMENT OF A FREE QUEBEC IS UNACCEPTABLE TO THE PEOPLE AND GOVERNMENT OF CANADA. IN MONTREAL LAST NIGHT, THE FRENCH PRESIDENT, SPEAKING TO A BIG CROWD OUTSIDE THE CITY HALL, SAID "VIVE QUEBEC LIBRE" (LONG LIVE FREE QUEBEC) -- THE SLOGAN OF THE QUEBEC INDEPENDENCE MOVEMENT.

WILD CHEERS GREETED PRESIDENT DE GAULLE'S WORDS AND THERE WERE SHOUTS OF "DOWN WITH THE QUEEN" -- A REFERENCE TO BRITAIN'S QUEEN ELIZABETH.

THE SPEECH FOLLOWED A BARNSTORMING TOUR OF FRENCH CANADIAN SETTLEMENTS ALONG THE ST. LAWRENCE RIVER FROM QUEBEC TO MONTREAL, IN WHICH ABOUT ONE-MILLION FRENCH CANADIANS LIVE.

MR PEARSON ADDED THAT CERTAIN STATEMENTS BY THE PRESIDENT TEND TO ENCOURAGE THE SMALL MINORITY OF OUR POPULATION WHOSE AIM IS TO DESTROY CANADA. HE SAID: "THE PEOPLE OF CANADA ARE FREE. EVERY PROVINCE OF CANADA IS FREE. CANADIANS DO NOT NEED TO BE LIBERATED."
THE CANADIAN OPPOSITION LEADER, MR DIEFENBAKER, CALLED PRESIDENT DE GAULLE'S WORDS "AN INEXCUSABLE INTRUSION INTO OUR INTERNAL AFFAIRS."
AT THE END OF HIS SPEECH FROM A BALCONY OF MONTREAL'S CITY HALL, PRESIDENT DE GAULLE SAID:
