    A RUNNING GUN BATTLE BETWEEN SOUTH KOREAN POLICE AND NORTH KOREAN INFILTRATORS RESULTED IN THE DEATH OF 11 PEOPLE IN SEOUL, THE SOUTH KOREAN CAPITAL, ON SUNDAY NIGHT. TENSION BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH KOREA HAS MOUNTED NOTICEABLY IN THE LAST YEAR FOLLOWING AN INCREASE IN NORTH KOREAN FORAYS ACROSS THE BORDER AND ATTACKS AT SEA BY NORTH KOREAN CRAFT.

    THE LATEST BIG CLASH IS SAID TO HAVE OCCURRED WHEN 31 NORTH KOREAN AGENTS TRIED TO PUSH THEIR WAY THROUGH A CHECKPOINT IN NORTHERN SEOUL, CLAIMING THEY WERE SOUTH KOREAN OFFICIALS. WHEN POLICE STOPPED THEM THEY ARE CLAIMED TO HAVE OPENED FIRE WITH MACHINE-GUNS AND THROWN A HAND GRENADE, KILLING ONE POLICEMAN AND FIVE CIVILIANS. IN RETURN, POLICE AND TROOPS SHOT TWO AGENTS IN THE EXCHANGE AND THREE MORE IN MOUNTAINS NORTH OF SEOUL EARLY THE NEXT DAY.

    A NORTH KOREAN CAPTURED DURING THE CLASH IS SAID TO HAVE CLAIMED THAT HE AND HIS COMRADES "CAME DOWN TO CHOP THE HEAD OFF PRESIDENT CHUNG-HEE PARK". THE MAN, WHO IDENTIFIED HIMSELF AS A NORTH KOREAN ARMY OFFICE, LATER APPEARED AT A PRESS CONFERENCE WITH HIS HANDS TIED. A SOUTH KOREAN MILITARY SPOKESMAN SAID LATER THAT THE 31 INFILTRATORS WERE MEMBERS OF A NORTH KOREAN ARMY ORGANISATION TRAINED FOR SUBVERSION IN SOUTH KOREA.
