    THIRTY FIRE ENGINES POURED TONS OF WATER ON A GIANT FIRE WHICH BLAZED FOR MORE THAN FOUR HOURS AT A MOTOR OIL PLANT NEAR MARSEILLES, FRANCE, YESTERDAY (SATURDAY).

    THE FIRE GUTTED A WAREHOUSE, CAUSING DAMAGE UNOFFICIALLY ESTIMATED AT MILLIONS OF FRANCS (HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS POUNDS STERLING). THE PLANT WAS OWNED BY ESSO STANDARD.

    HOUSES SURROUNDING THE PLANT WERE EVACUATED AS FLAMES LEAPT 60 FEET (20 METRES) HIGH, BUT NO CASUALTIES WERE REPORTED.

    THE OIL PLANT WAS IN PORT ST. LOUIS DU RHONE, A SHORT DISTANCE WEST OF MARSEILLES.

    OFFICIALS ASSESSING DAMAGE HAVE NOT YET DISCLOSED THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE.
