Background: More than 400 films are being screened over a two-week period as part of the 27th Cannes International Film Festival in France. But also attracting the attention of the crowd, and hopefully film-makers, are the scores of young starlets crowding the beaches hoping to be "discovered".

The Festival opened last Wednesday (8 May) but traditionally, although the judging began then, the glitter and social life takes a week to warm up for the final awards. In the prestigious Grand Prix, 26 feature films from 47 countries are going before the judges. Of these, themes about criminals and swindlers are predominant. The United States has more films in the competition than ever before -- and more than any other single country. India and Mexico have films entered for the first time in several years.

Seats to many of the glittering, star-crowded screenings are impossible to get, and the crowds are packing into the beachside resort of Cannes to watch the fringe entertainment associated with the festival. For the young and beautiful -- and the photographers -- this year's festival is once more proving a success. Spurred by the rare success stories of other starlets who have won film parks after catching an eye on the beach, many aspiring young actresses are spending the greater part of each day of the festival parading on the sand Bikinis are the uniform, with the top discarded by the less inhibited.
