  • Description

126 PEOPLE ESCAPED DEATH YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) -- SOME WITHOUT EVEN GETTING THEIR FEET WET -- WHEN A JET AIRLINER FAILED TO TAKE OFF FROM HONG KONG AIRPORT AND PLUNGED INTO THE HARBOUR. PASSENGERS PRAISED THE AUSTRALIAN PILOT OF THE CATHAY PACIFIC AIRWAYS CONVAIR 880 FOR HIS COOLNESS IN FREEING HIMSELF AND HELPING PASSENGERS GET OUT OF THE STILL-FLOATING FUSELAGE. ONE PERSON, A SOUTH VIETNAMESE WOMAN, WAS KILLED AND 20 PEOPLE WERE DETAINED IN HOSPITAL BUT THEIR INJURIES WERE DESCRIBED AS NOT SERIOUS.

AS FLOTILLA OF JUNKS AND SMALL BOATS HEADED FOR THE CRASH SCENE SOON AFTER THE SAIGON-BOUND AIRLINER SWERVED FROM THE RUNWAY, WHICH STRETCHERS LIKE A FINGER OUT INTO THE HARBOUR, AND HIT THE SEA AT ABOUT 100 MILES AN HOUR (160 K.P.H.) SNAPPING OFF THE NOSE.

INSIDE THE CABIN THE CRASH CAUSED LITTLE DAMAGE AND AN ORDERLY EVACUATION ON TO THE WINGS WAS ORGANISED. SOME OF THE PASSENGERS STEPPED STRAIGHT FROM THE WALLOWING AIRLINER WITHOUT WETTING THEIR FEET, BUT OTHERS WERE SOAKED AND HAD TO BE HELPED OUT OF THE FLOODED FUSELAGE. THE CREW WERE THE LAST TO LEAVE.
